"Guangxi - A Beauty on Earth" online video series (2) Fangchenggang, Guigang, Hechi, Chongzuo

In this series, we introduce you to the cities of Fangchenggang, Guigang, Hechi and Chongzuo in the southern Chinese province of Guangxi:

  • Fangchenggang is located on the coast of the Gulf of Tonkin, where the southern end of China's east coast meets the beginning of the southwestern border. The city is one of the most important places of origin of maritime culture in the Gulf of Tonkin. Around one million people live here, belonging to 21 different ethnic groups.
  • Guigang is both a historical prefecture town with a history of more than 2,200 years and a modern city. The tradition of lotus cultivation has existed here since ancient times, which is why Guigang is also known as the "Lotus City of China".
  • Hechi is the first globally recognized city of longevity in China, with 32.6 centenarians per 100,000 inhabitants in Bama County, home to eight ethnic groups. Their customs are unique and their folk song culture is widely known.

"Guangxi - A beauty on earth" online photo exhibition(3) Baise, Hezhou, Wuzhou, Qinzhou, Yulin, Laibin

We will show you the charm of the cities of Baise, Hezhou, Wuzhou, Qinzhou, Yulin and Laibin in Guangxi:

  • Baise is a city with four million inhabitants in the catchment area of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces and the Guanggxi Autonomous Region. It is home to the world's largest collection of karst funnels, the world's largest water-spanning natural bridge and the world's largest lotus pools. The 365 km long border with Vietnam is called "the most beautiful borderline in China".
  • The history of Hezhou can be traced back 2,100 years. The cultures of the Chinese Central Plain and the ancient Baiyue people, the Xiangchu culture, the Hakka and Yao culture and the culture of the ancient Xiaohe Strait met and intermingled here.
  • Wuzhou is located on the border between Guangdong and Guangxi and in the center of the Per River Xijiang Basin. Today, Wenzhou is a tourist city of distinction, the world capital of artificial gemstones, but also the birthplace of Lingnan culture and the Cantonese language.
  • Qinzhou is located at the center of the Guangxi coastal strip on the Gulf of Tonkin, with rivers, lakes, mountains, sea and islands in close proximity, making Qinzhou an excellent tourist city in China and a model tourist city for the whole of Guangxi.
  • The word Yulin means "Lingnan - beautiful as a gemstone, the landscape a forest", and the landscape is characterized by three mountains, Darong Mountain, Yunkai Mountain and Liuwanda Mountain, and two rivers, Nanliu Jiang and Beiliu Jiang.
  • Laibin has always been known as the "World Capital of the Yao". The Jinxiu Autonomous County of the Yao nationality is home to five branches of this ethnic group and numerous ethnic folk customs.

Cultural tourism on the Silk Road

The term "Silk Road" was first coined by the German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen. It refers to the overland route that led from the Chinese cities of Chang'an and Luoyang via the regions of Gansu and Xinjiang through Central and Western Asia to Europe, thus connecting China with the Mediterranean countries. Not only were goods traded along the Silk Road, but science, technology, culture and art were also exchanged and disseminated. In 2014, the Silk Road was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In this section, we introduce you to the long history and rich tourism resources of the regions along the Silk Road.

Intangible cultural heritage for poverty alleviation

The Chinese practice of poverty alleviation through intangible cultural heritage is based on local conditions and focuses on strengthening sustainable development capabilities in poorer areas. The local development situation and the respective regional resources are always taken into account. When selecting the extensive development projects, the creation of jobs, the training of skilled workers and the development of market potential are always at the forefront. China has gained valuable practical experience in this process of poverty reduction in its own country by incorporating intangible cultural heritage and has shown a new way of using cultural resources for the purpose of poverty reduction. In this section, we will use representative examples to show you the history of poverty alleviation involving intangible cultural heritage in China.
